5 Ways to Make Your CV Not Look AI-Written (Without Starting Over)
If you used ChatGPT, Claude, or another AI tool to help write your CV, you're not alone. A 2025 survey found that over 60% of UK job seekers had used AI in their job applications. The problem? AI detectors are getting better at spotting it.
Here are five ways to humanise your AI-assisted CV without rewriting everything.
1. Add Personal Voice
AI tends to write in a neutral, formal tone. Add phrases that sound like you — opinions, specific preferences, language that reflects your personality. Replace 'Managed a team of 5' with 'Led a tight-knit team of 5, building trust and accountability from day one.'
2. Vary Sentence Length
AI models prefer consistent sentence length. Mix it up. Use short, punchy sentences alongside longer, more detailed ones. This closely mimics natural human writing patterns.
3. Use Industry-Specific Language
Generic AI language ('optimised', 'leveraged', 'streamlined') is a tell. Replace with specific terminology from your industry. If you work in NHS, use clinical language. If you're in tech, use technical specifics.
4. Add Quantifiable Achievements
AI often writes vague achievements. Make them specific: 'Increased efficiency by 34%' rather than 'Improved operational efficiency.' Specific numbers are harder for AI to invent and feel more authentic.
5. Read It Aloud
The simplest test. Read your CV aloud. If it doesn't sound like something you'd say in an interview, it needs humanising. AI-written text often reads well silently but sounds unnatural spoken.
